"As a new teacher, how has social media helped you?"
- Chris Wejr

When I started the Education program in September, I barely left a footprint in the education social media world. But that quickly changed under the mentorship of Ryan Hong, who directed me towards exploring the many tools available for sharing resources, connecting with other educators, and developing as an educator.

These are the resources that I currently use:
  • Weebly Blog - a place to record my experiences and reflections related to teaching; I also love reading the blogs of other educators to increase the depth and breadth of my learning
  • Twitter (@BettyFei)- a fantastic tool for sharing of ideas and resources, making connections with other educators across the globe, and keeping up-to-date with issues, questions, and initiatives in current education
  • WikiSpace/FaceBook- great tools for staying connected and sharing ideas with others in my education cohort
  • YouTube Channel/Teaching Channel- great tools for finding multimedia resources, seeing lessons and classroom practices in action, and sharing of ideas with other educators
  • Pinterest/Edmodo- useful platforms for sharing ideas and resources
Addition: Since Nov 30, 2012, I also began using:
  • Instagram- useful for making student learning more visible to both students and parents; a great visual record of learning for the whole year

@ Betty - @ Betty - You have done a great job creating your digital footprint and dossier! It is great to see new teachers embracing social media. Social media plays a key role in how students learn. Teachers who embrace this concept will be able to engage their students better. Keep building your teaching portfolio!

You forgot to mention your use of your Instagram account to display and make the learning more visible! You have a great eye for photography and you have clearly showed this with the creative work that you have done with the students!

If you haven't had a chance to read much of it yet, check out 'Visible Learning' by John Hattie as it will give you many more ideas on ways to improve student learning.

If you decide to get an Apple mobile device, I will show you how to streamline things to help improve your workflow. One thing that you might want to do is work your android based mobile device so that you can do basically what an apple device can do. This is a niche that you could definitely tap into. Although Apple controls a large market share in education, it is also important for us to address the other devices that students will be using.

Happy New Year!

@ Ryan

Thank you for taking the time to comment! Effective use of social media is indeed important to student learning and professional development. Thanks for reminding me about Instagram- I will add that to the post.

Yes, I've been reading bits from John Hattie's book- perhaps I will write about it in a future blog post =)

Thanks for the recommendations about streamlining my mobile device. I will look into it more, and probably ask you for help!

Social media has proven to be a fast and efficient marketing tool for businesses of any size. For individuals, it is a savvy means to stay in touch with the people you know. Instagram is one of the more popular new kids on the block as far as social media is concerned. One of the reasons that Instagram is so popular is that it uses photos to convey a message. This is a marketer's dream as photos and pictures tend to attract more attention and draw more people as compared to textual content.
